Facades Of PFS – The Whole Story…

The Frees have definitely outdone themselves again. "Shades of PFS", "Rhythm of The Frees", "Facades of PFS". These 3 simple phrases will definitely go down in the history of Penang Free School. For those of you incompetent nincompoops who have absolutely no idea of what I am talking about, I am refering to the concerts held by the Music And Drama Society of PFS biannually. This year, the students of PFS will be staging "Facades of PFS". Scheduled over 3 nights, it is bound to attract thousands of spectators and music lovers.

The concert, directed wonderfully by Miss Angeline Cheah with the help of Miss Sherlyn Yap was definitely a success. For those of you who attended the concert, I am sure it was an unforgettable experience. One of a kind. For those of you who had the misfortune of missing it, too bad, as they say. The night started well enough, with a vibrant and colourful dance routine from the Malay Cultural Society. Presenting a traditional dance, their costumes and decorations certainly attracted attention. If you think that the rest of the concert would be boring as it started with a traditional presentation, then you are in for a big surprise. Hosted by 2 emcees, namely Angela Looi and Terrence Joseph Dass who were witty and funny, it definitely was anything but a boring night. Performances by the students which ranged from rapping to singing and dancing sure kept the crowd entertained.

Groups such as ‘Vintage Cyanide’, ‘Synergy’, ‘Rusty Rascals’ and ‘Lyrical Mayhem’ belted out performances that blew the crowd away. This could be judged easily by the crowds endless cheers which encouraged the performers to give their best, presenting songs ranging from "Creed" to "Mariah Carey" as well as "Westlife". As if group presentations were not enough, we had to have soloists as well. These wonderful and multi-talented young ladies and gents included Nicolaus Andrew Gregory, our very own Elvis – Quah Cheong Lim, Ronnie Ong and our equally talented songstress Saw Jin-Jin, who just happens to be in the cast of the "Twelfth Night" staged by the Penang Players (BTW, her photo IS in the papers — Star-North Section, May 12).

Not to be left out, dance groups such as the trio ‘White Angels’ and ‘The Starlight Country Group’ proved that dancing was an art which entertained the dancers and the audience. This event was further graced with the attendance of the school’s premier Concert Band led by Anand Raj, performing a perfect selection of songs. As the night drew to a close, the concert came to an end, with a heart stomping performance by the ‘Banghra’ group and a most rowdy and simple finale. However, the idea of dropping balloons was respectable.

The night was no doubt entertaining and could be considered as an almost flawless concert, apart from a few minor setbacks which included a sounds system that did not perform up to expectations. Moreover, a few performers had the jitterbugs and were obviously nervous and full of tension which was absolutely normal. Nevertheless, the night passed on and the audience were definitely entertained, well worth their ticket money. And as for the performers and all those involved who had given up so much of their time and effort, it was surely a night to remember with the opportunity of performing being a satisfying reward. Being a performer myself, I can assure you it was a night to remember for all, having the honour of being part of one of the most prestigious events in Penang Free School.
