PFS Inter – House Games: Prize Presentation

16th August, 2001: The time has come! After much waiting and anticipation, it is THE moment to present the prizes to the deserving people who had participated in the games.

The Penang Free School Inter – house Games which ended about a fortnight ago had been going on since May. It is an incorporation of various sports and games, namely chess, basketball, table tennis, netball etc.

The prize presentation ceremony was held at the hall with full splendour on a lovely Thursday morning. Mr. Loh Chin Kuang, our ever – popular P. E. teacher, as he does annually, announced the winners.

The day saw the giving – away of many shields, plagues and trophies to the proud sportsmen of Free School, in the pursuit to motivate them and cultivate the fighting spirit of Frees.

However, the ceremony also showed our new principal, En. Arabi bin Sulaiman, the "dark side" of Penang Free School. Echoes of jeers, not cheers, filled up the hall when the names of a few unpopular faces (mostly prefects) were blarred out from public address speakers. Not a very nice and gentlemanly thing to do though, on my opinion.

This year, Wu Lien Teh House dominated the scene, clinching the Overall Winner title for the Inter – House Games as well as being the Best Overall House for this year’s sports events. One notable moment was when Mr. Woo Kok Ho, House Master for Wu Lien Teh, stepped out to receive his souvenir from the principal. When he flashed his pearly whites for the camera, suddenly a loud, drawn – out applause echoed in the entire hall. No word could describe what I, a Pinhornite, felt then, except for "wow…".

Although the ceremony had its glitches, it ended up well. The Penang Free School Inter – House Games Prize Presentation Ceremony symbolised another of our alma mater’s pompous and strongheld traditions. The ceremony was, in every way, a symbol of the Frees — upbeat and unpredictable.
