Visit By Akashi High School Of Japan

They came and then they left….a group of 10 students comprising 4 girls and 6 boys accompanied by their teachers and Principal, Mr. Hiroyuki Nakamura from Akashi Shimizu Senior High School of Japan( akashi)visited Penang Free School yesterday.

Many of the Frees were uninformed (judging by the hoo-ha they usually make whenever they know visitors are coming). The Comclub members was told after the special assembly (please refer to ‘Launching Of Merdeka Celebration Month’, submitted 17th August) that they came in spite of some technical problems.

japanese_hmThis friendly visit instills and forges an even deeper, more meaningful relationship between both schools. One of their teachers, Mr. Yoshio Sugimoto translated the conversation that took place (they could speak and understand a bit of English).

The morning started off quite badly. Whilst Comclub Vice President Tye Kuo-Lun and Technical Director Lim Chun Kai ran around frantically to set everything up in place, President Kuah Swee Heng tried hard to memorise the words "hajimemashite dozo yoroshiku" and Loke Cheok Quen (that’s me) worried about what to say. Finally it was decided that Swee Heng shall brief our Japanese friends on the PFS Online forum, Kuo-Lun on the virtual tour and I on the archives. When everything was ready, someone (apparently I was the idiot) tripped on some cables, causing everything to go haywire. Luckily, Chun Kai and Kuo-Lun came to the rescue and handled the situation.

However, everything else went well and we managed to fix everything up right before their arrival. It was around 11.15 am when they stepped into the lab. Kuah Swee Heng explained to them the various activities of the computer club.

After that, our visitors were shown a video clip on the history Penang Free School prepared by Selangor OFA in conjuction with the school 175th anniversary. Senior Assistant 1, Mr. Khoo Poh Kheng was there, briefing them on what they saw on the screen. Unfortunately, someone (unknown culprit) tripped on the cables for the second time, causing some delay.

When everything was back in place, Swee Heng stepped up to introduce to them PFS Online, Penang Free School’s official website. He explained to the guests the features of the news section and the school virtual forum.

Next up was Kuo-Lun, who gave the guests a brief insight on the PFS Online Virtual Tour. He spoke about the uses and the special functions available in the tour. He adds that with the tour, outsiders will be able to see what Free School looks like.

Shortly after, I gave them a warm welcome to Malaysia, before proceeding in briefing our visitors about the PFS Online Archives, which provides not only historical facts on Free School, but images of documents and photographs as well.

japanese_hmAfter that, Mr. Yoshio Sugimoto proposed that representatives from both schools should correspond to further understand each other. Hence, e-mail addresses and URLs were exchanged.

Finally, group photographs was taken, we thanked each other and they left quietly at around 11.45 am. This meeting, although short, will be etched in our memories for life.

*Comclub PFS wishes to take this opportunity to apologise to the visitors from Akashi Shimizu Senior High School for the interruptions caused by unforeseen circumstances during their stop here. We hope that we will be able to do a better job in the future and wish to thank you again for paying us this memorable visit. Good luck to you in your future undertakings.
