In spite of the rain, the governor walked from the pavilion to the school hall for the break. We are all so touched by his effort to keep the tradition of the school going.

     HIP-HIP HOORAY

12th March 2003 was the day  Penang Free School hold its 71st annual Sports Day. Unlike previous years, the house tents were beautifully adorned and they were pitched facing the pavilion. The day started off with hectic and meticulous preparations on the field by the students and teachers in the morning. They inspected the field thoroughly making sure that everything was in order. The band members were seen practicing with their musical instruments for the last time prior to the big event.

Finally at 2:00p.m., the day kick started with the march past. The school band with the drum major at its head led all the houses in the march past. It was an occasion full of pomp and pageantry. After the oath was taken by Barath Kumar on behalf of all the athletes, the contingents marched out in style with the band playing the inspirational melody  ‘The Final Countdown’ . The Sports Day was officially declared opened by Puan Hajah Fauziah binti Haji Othman who represented the Chief Education Officer of Penang.

The occasion is futher graced by the kind presence of Tuan Yang Terutama Yang Dipertua Negeri Pulau Pinang, Tun Dato’ Seri Haji Abdul Rahman bin Haji Abbas, SMN., DUPN., SPDK., DMPN.,DJN and his consort Yang Amat Berbahagia Toh Puan Datin Seri Hajah Majimor Bt. Shariff. They arrived at around 3.30pm.

The second half the event started with two performances from Taekwando and Silat. It was followed by a splendid performance by the school band.

Again, the very talented drum major Lim Wei Chan led his company of  good musicians to entertain the crowd with a medley of melodramatic tunes ranging from the Warner Birds opening melody to the Andy Williams sensational classic Can’t take my eyes off you as well as a Backstreet Boys hit in cool formation and stance. The band ended their show by playing of course, the school rally in a full march past and all Frees including some outsiders who appreciated the significance of the rally stood at attention. A Free School spirit, indeed !

The sports day ended with Barath Kumar leading the school to give three salutes to the Governor.
