The ISM Young Achiever’s Award is a competition organised by the Institution of Surveyors Malaysia with the support of the Ministry of Education. The Institution started organising this competition for schools in the year 2000 to instill the students’ interest in Mathematics, Science and Technology in general and the Science of Measurement in particular. It also aims to develop student’s skill in economic reasoning and making opinions.

According to ISM Young Achiever’s Award Organising Chairman, Mr. Sarkunan Subramaniam, there are four questions that participating teams need to solve during the Regional and National stage.

"In the first section, we will give them a task that is related to property or property development that deals with the four branches of surveying. For example, in the competition last year , we asked them to identify sites that can be redeveloped. Participants were required to indicate how the site should be redeveloped, what kind of development and calculate the gain that they can expect from the redevelopment for the community around it," Sarkunan explained.

"Then in the second part, participants need to build a model of the project using the budget and resources given to them. You will be surprised as some of the models are as good as the models done by experienced architects," he added.

In the third part, the participants need to present the proposal in fifteen minutes, which will brush up their communication skills. In this part, participants will be able to use multimedia technology to further enhance the presentation before they are given general questions on surveying to answer in the fourth part.

A winner from each region will compete in the National level and will be allowed to enhance the project using the information and experience they have gained during the Regional competiton to compete in the National level.

This is the first year Penang Free School is taking part in the competition. We are indeed proud to be the first runner up in the Northern region. We won a cash prize of RM 1000.
