Once again, Penang Free School has proven its pedigree; this time around, one of its students, Neoh Joon Kee of Lower Six D emerged as champion for an Essay Writing Competition that was held in conjunction with the state-level celebration of the World No Tobacco Day. This event was organized jointly by several government and non-government bodies including the Penang State Departments of Health and Education, Lions Club Georgetown, Clearinghouse for Tobacco Control and the National Poison Centre.

With the selection of his essay entitled "Merokok Sebagai Laluan Kepada Penagihan Dadah" ("Smoking Leads to Drug Abuse") as the winning entry, Neoh Joon Kee received a cheque for RM200, a personal trophy, a challenge trophy and a Certificate of Achievement. These were presented to him at the Carrefour hypermarket in Butterworth on Saturday, 28 June 2003. It is hoped that the school can continue to produce such achievements in accordance with its motto of "Scholars. Sportsmen, Gentlemen".
